Helen Escobedo

Helen " Elena" Escobedo ( born July 28, 1934 in Mexico City; † 16 September 2010) was a Mexican sculptor and installation artist.

Biography

Escobedo's father was Mexican, her mother English. She even studied in her hometown of sculpture from 1950 to 1951 at Mexico City College (now Universidad de las Américas ), among others, Germán Cueto, and subsequent to 1954 on a scholarship at the Royal College of Art in London to the master's degree. The work of the internationally active artist are predominantly of monumental size. Escobedo used industrial and natural materials. Overall, they made ​​30 sculptures in public places, including next to Mexico and Canada, the United States, Cuba, England, New Zealand and Israel. In addition to her studio in Mexico, she also has one in Berlin, formerly in Hamburg.

From 1958 to 1962 she directed the museum of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México ( UNAM) from 1981 to 1982, she was Technical Director of the Museo Nacional de Arte and 1982 to 1984 director of the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico City. From 1985 to 1989 she worked as curator of the UNAM Museum in the field of international exhibitions.

In 1986, she was associating member of the Royal Academy of Sciences, des Lettres et des Beaux- Arts de Belgique in 1991 and received a Guggenheim Fellowship.

Escobedo presented their works in 35 solo exhibitions and over 100 group exhibitions at home and abroad.
