Helfensteiner

Helfensteiner is a red grape that is also known under the name Blue Weinberger. It was created in 1931 by crossing Pinot and blue Trollinger at the State Training and Research Institute of Pomology and Viticulture in Weinsberg. Variety protection of new variety was granted in 1960. Breeder of the variety is August Herold, which is also a breeder of varieties Kerner (1929 ), Heroldrebe (1929 ) and spine fields ( 1955). The details of the breeder to the crossing parents could be confirmed in the meantime by DNA analysis.

The name is derived from the castle Helfenstein near Geislingen from. This variety is grown in the region Württemberg; the area under vines is about 25 hectares. The red wines are fruity and pleasing and rosé wines are of good quality. The low acceptance of the variety for winemakers is due to the fluctuating income, which are caused by their Blühempfindlichkeit. Helfensteiner is a variety of the noble vine (Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphrodite flowers and is thus self- fruiting. When the wine-growing economic disadvantage is avoided, no return delivered to have male plants grow.

Meanwhile, other breeds have emerged from the Helfensteiner, which is primarily the spine fields, a cross with the Heroldrebe, a great success. The variety Hegel comes from the same parents as the thorn fields.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In the ampelography the habit is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is spinnwebig hairy to white wool and whitish- green color.
  • The large to very large, dark green leaves ( see also the article sheet form) are three-lobed to five-lobed weak. The petiole is overlapping closed. The leaf margin serrate pointed. Compared to other varieties, the teeth are set wide. The leaf surface (also called lamina ) is bubbly.
  • The slightly conical to cylindrical - shaped grape size, shouldered and dichtbeerig (depending on the degree of Blühempfindlichkeit also loose- ). The slightly rounded, slightly elongated berries are medium in size and of a bluish- black color. The juice of the berries is crisp colored slightly reddish.

Helfensteiner drives middle early to late and missing that's not always the late spring frosts. The winter frost resistance is moderately good. The strong vigorous variety can provide very good returns. However, it tends to lower Blühfestigkeit. Generally, however, also applies to Helfensteiner: if the vine is not pruned correctly (→ Training system ), there is Blühempfindlichkeit despite the risk to high yields with the concomitant reduction in quality. The yield can be as high 100 hectoliters / hectare.

They often reach medium-high must weights. On average, the must weight a few degrees Oechsle is above the Blue Portuguese.

The flowering period is late. The Helfensteiner matures only a few days after Chasselas, which also makes early -maturing. It can be harvested shortly after the Portuguese. The vine is not very sensitive to the wrong person and powdery mildew. Beer Through the hard sleeve, the variety is hardly susceptible to gray mold.
