Helmuth Koinigg

Helmut Koinigg ( born November 3, 1948 in Vienna, Austria, † October 6, 1974 in Watkins Glen, United States) was an Austrian racing driver.

In his home he was a very popular and talented drivers in the Formula Super V and the Ford Cologne Capri touring car racing team.

Formula 1

His first attempt in the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Austria in a 1974 Brabham BT42 Italian Scuderia Finotto ended with a non- qualification.

When Team Surtees announced one after the two regular driver Carlos Pace and Jochen Mass, as they felt the car was too uncertain. John Surtees then offered Koinigg a test at Goodwood, and then offered him a two year contract. At the Canadian Grand Prix, Mosport International Raceway on he drove Surtees TS16 by a space 22 at the start finish line in tenth place and brought the team one of the best results of the season. Two weeks later at the U.S. Grand Prix at Watkins Glen Koinigg also reached only the 22th starting position. In the ninth round he came out never entirely clear reasons from to actually quite a slow point of the track. Upon impact on the guardrail broke away there, the bottom two steel belts from the holders, the car shot by, and there are remaining upper steel band guillotined the driver formally.

On the day exactly one year before the French Formula 1 driver François Cevert was killed in an accident on the same track.
