Hendrick Avercamp

Hendrick Avercamp (* 1585 in Amsterdam, † May 15 1634 in Kampen ) was a Dutch painter.

Life

Hendrick Avercamp was born in Amsterdam, in a house next to the Nieuwe Kerk ( " New Church " ) and in the Oude Kerk ( " Old Church " ) was baptized on January 27, 1585. 1586 the family moved to Kampen, where his father opened a pharmacy. Mother's side he was a grandson of the scholar Peter Meerhoutanus. Probably due to a congenital deafness, he never learned to speak. He received lessons from his mother 's letter, but was soon found that he could better express his feelings with his drawing talent. It is also often referred to as " the mute of Kampen " ( de Stomme van Kampen ).

From the age of twelve he received in a poor drawing teacher teaching that the plague fell early victim. With about 18 years Avercamp moved to Amsterdam, where he became an apprentice at the Danish painter Pieter Isaacsz. The influence of the Flemish school in particular of the landscape painter Gillis van Coninxloo is felt in Avercamp.

1614 Avercamp Kampen went back to where he lived until his death in 1634 and worked. In his later years he taught his nephew Barent Avercamp, who also mostly painted winter landscapes.

Works

From 1614 to 1634 Avercamp created especially a variety of winter landscapes. The early landscapes of Avercamp have predominantly reporting character. His paintings are colorful and lively, and are characterized by their popularity, which is why he could many of his drawings, some of which were later colored with watercolor sell.

Probably painted Avercamp in his workshop based on sketches he had made during the winter. His preference for winter scenes come possibly from his youth, in which he often went running with his parents skate. So then also often his pictures are a large number of people, which fall to winter pleasures, particularly indulge in ice skating. The last quarter of the 16th century, was born during the Avercamp, is considered one of the coldest periods of the so-called Little Ice Age.

The Flemish influence is particularly in his early work reflected, in which he leaned the Elder also to Pieter Bruegel. Typically, his paintings have a high and wide horizon and show a variety of busy people, with many stories and anecdotes are hidden in the pictures. He used mainly painting techniques such as the " atmospheric perspective", which suggests a spatial depth by a change in color near the horizon.

Many of his paintings are now in private ownership. An important collection is located in the Castle of Windsor.

In the tradition of Hendrick Avercamp's Winter views painted especially his successor Jan van Goyen, Aert van der Neer and Jan van de Capelle.
