Hendrik C. van de Hulst

Hendrik Christoffel van de Hulst ( born November 19, 1918 in Utrecht, † July 31, 2000 in Leiden ) was a Dutch astrophysicist.

Van de Hulst 1944 calculated theoretically the 21 cm line ( 1420.4058 MHz) of the interstellar neutral hydrogen, a special case of the hyperfine structure. They shall be the tipping of the spins of the hydrogen nucleus orbiting electron. 1951, this radiation has been demonstrated by several radio observatories independently, first by Edward Mills Purcell.

In 1952 he became a professor at the University of Leiden.

In addition to research in the field of radio astronomy, he provided valuable contributions to the understanding of light scattering by small particles of the solar corona and the interstellar matter.
