Henk Hofland

Hendrik " Henk " Adrianus Johannes Hofland ( born July 20, 1927 in Rotterdam) is a Dutch journalist. He was from 1967 to 1970 editor of the daily newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad and after its merger with Nieuwe Courant Rotterdamsche for NRC Handelsblad 1970-1972 one of three editors of this newspaper.

Life

After his parents had refused to fight in 1945 Hoflands wish in conclusion of World War II against the Japanese, he did after the war from his military service and then went to the Dutch East Indies. During this time he set propaganda films for the Dutch military. After his return Hofland studied at Instituut Nijenrode and then to the Social Faculty, University of Amsterdam. In 1953 he began training as a journalist at the Amsterdam Algemeen Handelsblad. Hofland wanted to get back quickly on back to the university because of his foreign editor of its newspaper but a permanent position offered he buried that plan and completed no more from his studies.

During the Hungarian uprising of 1956 Hofland reported from Budapest, where his car was fired after he disregarded a stop sign. There was a steep career in the Algemeen Handelsblad, according to the head of department stations abroad and deputy editor Hofland 1967 appointed chief editor. He tried a number of concept changes, including an opinion page, under the direction of Hans van Mierlo, to stop the loss of importance of the newspaper. However, this was not the Algemeen Handelsblad in 1970 merged with the Nieuwe Courant Rotterdamsche for NRC Handelsblad. Hofland, who was now part of a three-headed chief editor, was not the pleasure of the Board, in 1972, finally released him from his position in the following period.

Since the newspaper Het Parool did not want to have him as a reporter ( he was considered too old), he resorted to a variety of new activities. He stayed television critic for his newspaper, wrote a weekly column for the Haagsche Post and 1985-89 travel reports from the Eastern Bloc and worked for the radio and television. His on ice covered during the time of the ascent to the chief editor of the Algemeen Handelsblad book authorship took Hofland strengthened again, since his replacement as chief editor of NRC Handelsblad, he wrote about 30 books as the main or co-author on the political and cultural development of the Netherlands.

For this omnipresence Hofland was finally honored in 1999 by his colleagues in a special way: in a voor by students of the School Journalistiek organized in Utrecht survey of newspaper editors to journalists of the twentieth century, he took first place.

Curiosities

Hofland, a lifelong advocate of liberal ideals, was in the late 1960s by Haya van Someren - Downer ( MPs in the Tweede Kamer for the VVD) and Harm van Riel (Chairman of the VVD) persuaded to become a member of their party. Someren - Downer even hoped that Hofland could one day become Chairman, but Hofland was excluded later - he had not paid his dues.
