Hans van Mierlo

Henricus Antonius Franciscus Maria Oliva ( Hans) van Mierlo ( born August 18, 1931 in Breda, † March 11, 2010 in Amsterdam) was a Dutch politician. He co-founded the left-liberal party Democraten 66 ( D66 ) and became its central figure.

Life

Van Mierlo studied law at the Catholic University of Nijmegen (Nijmegen ) and received his doctorate there in 1960. From 1960 to 1967 he worked as a journalist for the newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad liberal in Amsterdam, first in the domestic editors, then as Head of the opinion page.

In 1966 he was instrumental in the founding of the social-liberal party Democraten 66 and was its first chairman.
