Henrik Otto Donner

Henrik Otto Donner ( born November 16, 1939 in Tampere, † June 26, 2013 in Jakobstad ) was a Finnish composer and jazz musician.

Career

Donner studied at the Sibelius Academy with Joonas Kokkonen and Nils -Eric Fougstedt. In the early 1960s he was in Vienna pupil of György Ligeti. He studied electronic music with Gottfried Michael Koenig and at the Siemens Studio for Electronic Music in Munich.

Thunder is one of the most determined representatives of avant-garde and experimental music in Finland. In the 1960s, he came forward with a series of musical happenings: the Street Piece Helsinki ( a Straßenhappening, 1963), the Pasila Piece ( a television happening ), 1963 and Studio Sleeper ( a radio Happening, 1963). In the play ideograms I ( 1962), he combined twelve radios with an instrumental ensemble consisting of flute, clarinet, trombone and percussion. Ideograms II is a composition for tape and instruments. In his Six Bagatelles for String Quartet, the actions of the musicians between the pieces are part of the composition. His String Quartet from 1970 ends with an aphorism of Lenin, performed by a baritone.

In addition, Donner worked as a jazz trumpeter and composer. He led the group Free for All, Juhani Aaltonen played with and arranged for MA Numminen. In the field of jazz, he was from 1965 to 2010 participated in 14 recording sessions. He also composed film scores, including for Eino Ruutsalos Two Birds, and was one of the founders of the Finnish label Love Records, was released on the mainly prog rock and fusion jazz.
