Juhani Aaltonen

Juhani Aaltonen Antero [ juhɑni ɑntɛrɔ ɑ ː ltɔnɛn ] ( born December 12, 1935 in Kouvola ) is a Finnish jazz saxophonist and flautist -.

Aaltonen first completed training as a horn player. In 1961 he started at the Sibelius Academy to study classical flute, which he continued in Boston at the Berklee College of Music. After his return to Finland he worked mainly in a duo with Edward Vesala, besides also with Henrik Otto Donner, Heikki Sarmanto and Seppo Paakkunainen and taught himself the saxophone. He was honored as a jazz musician of the year 1968. In 1974 his first solo album, Etiquette.

In 1975, he was among the founders of the UMO Jazz Orchestra, where he remained until 1986. In addition, he worked among others with Jan Garbarek, Charlie Mariano, Edward Vesala, Peter Brötzmann, Tomasz Stanko, Jukka Tolonen and Arild Andersen.

From 1990 to 1992, with its own quartet with Olli Ahvenlahti, Heikki Virtanen and Reino Laine on tour, in addition, he worked in the 1990s primarily with pianist Heikki Sarmanto, 2001, her album Rise. With the trio album Mother Tongue he won the 2003 Jazz - Emma ( the Finnish Grammy ).
