Henry Ernest of Stolberg-Wernigerode

Heinrich Ernst ( last he called himself Henrich Ernst), Count of Stolberg- Wernigerode ( born December 7, 1716 in Wernigerode, † October 24, 1778 in Halberstadt ) was a German politician, canon, provost and writer of many hymns. He also published some poetry and song collections.

Life

He was the eldest surviving son of Count Christian Ernst of Stolberg- Wernigerode. His mother, Sophie Charlotte, née Countess zu Leiningen - Westerburg was heavily influenced by pietism and raised her son in this spirit. Heinrich Ernst studied at the universities of Halle ( Saale) and Göttingen, and already in 1739 granted a stipend at the cathedral chapter in Halberstadt and of King Christian IV of Denmark awarded the Danebrogorden. King Frederick II of Prussia confirmed his appointment as provost of the Foundation of St. Boniface and St. Mauritius in Halberstadt.

After Count Heinrich Ernst was already involved at an early stage of his father in the government, he took off in 1742 consistently attend the meetings of the count's chamber in Wernigerode. In this role, he strove for example, the Torfwesen am Brocken. The scale on the small chunks of peat in 1744 received its name Heinrich height.

1763 appointed Count Heinrich Ernst Johann Georg Ziesenis a knee image supplemented painting of King Frederick II of Prussia.

After his father's death on 25 October 1771 55 -year-old took over the government in the county of Wernigerode, where he particularly promoted the pietistic life. Already during the lifetime of his father, he was concerned about the increase in the hymnological Department of the count's library, collected and composed himself almost 400 (!) Hymns. He also promoted the folk poet Anna Louisa Karsch.

Family

Heinrich Ernst married on 11 December 1738 in Sorau the daughter of Count Erdmann II of Promnitz, Marie Elisabeth. She died from the effects of the birth of their second daughter on July 29, 1741 in Wernigerode.

After a year of mourning, he joined in Köthen a second marriage with Christiane Anna Princess of Anhalt- Köthen, daughter of Prince August Ludwig and his second wife, Emilie, Countess of Promnitz. The emerged from this union son Christian Friedrich took over the government in 1778.
