Henry Herbert, 3rd Earl of Carnarvon

Henry Herbert, 3rd Earl of Carnarvon ( * June 8, 1800 in London, † December 10, 1849 in Pusey, Oxfordshire ) was a British politician, author and traveler.

Life

Herbert was the eldest son of Henry George Herbert, 2nd Earl of Carnarvon. He wore from 1811 to 1833 the courtesy title of Lord Porchester. After attending Eton, he studied at Christ Church College in Oxford. In 1831 he was elected as a Tory in the House of Commons for the constituency of Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire, is now the Royal Wootton Bassett. This constituency was abolished by the legislation of the Reform Act 1832. 1833 Herbert succeeded his father Earl of Carnarvon was and thus he became a member of the House of Lords.

1842 began on Renaissance Castle Highclere Castle in Hampshire planned by Sir Charles Barry renovations to a Victorian property. These were completed by Herbert's death by his son in 1850.

Herbert was married to Henrietta Anne, the eldest daughter of Lord Henry Howard - Molyneux - Howard since 1830. The couple had two sons and a daughter. The eldest son of Henry Herbert, 4th Earl of Carnarvon was an important politician of the Conservative Party. The second son was Auberon Herbert. The of 1849 died at 49 years, Herbert widow lived until 1876.

The previous (2011) sold in over 100 countries TV series Downton Abbey, Julian Fellowes wrote the screenplay, was shot in substantial parts in the park and the castle of Highclere Castle.
