Career

Henry Huntly Haight completed a law degree at Yale University, which he successfully completed in 1844. He then joined the law firm of his father, who had settled in St. Louis in Missouri. After some time he started in San Francisco, California, independently and earned a good reputation as a lawyer.

In 1859 he became chairman of the Republican Party of California. A little later he turned to the Democratic Party. On September 4, 1867 he was elected as the 10th Governor of California; on 5 December of the same year he went to the four -year term. During this time the Transcontinental Railroad was completed which connected California with the East Coast. In addition, the Golden Gate Park was designed. Haight reduced the national debt and reorganized the health care in California. Nevertheless, he failed to be re-elected. He therefore resigned on 8 December 1871 the Office.

After his time as governor, he worked again as a lawyer. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of California. In 1878, he wanted to return to the political arena again. However, it no longer came about because he died the same year.
