Henry III, Duke of Bavaria

Henry III. of Bavaria ( * 940, † October 5 989) from the House of Luitpoldinger was born in 940 and was the son of the Duke Berthold of Bavaria. He ruled as Duke of Carinthia and Bavaria.

After the death of his father Berthold in 947 Henry was not invested with the duchy, but the brother of King Otto I, Henry, who had married 937 Judith, a daughter of Arnulf of evil.

It was not until 976, was isolated as Carinthia of Bavaria, Heinrich received by Emperor Otto II with its own Duchy of Carinthia and the associated Margraviate of Verona, which he did both already lost 978 again: The reasons for this are not sufficiently documented. Perhaps Henry joined the rebellion of the Bavarian Duke Henry II and had to go into exile. However, 983 Henry was enfeoffed as the last Luitpoldinger with the Bavarian duchy, which also the Duchy of Carinthia and the Italian brands were now added. After the empresses Theophano and Adelaide had 985 for the throne dispute over the succession of Otto II with Henry II ( the Brawler ) reconciled and this gave back his old duchy of Bavaria, retained Henry III. only the Duchy of Carinthia with the brands. With his death on October 5, 989 completed the detectable male line of the Luitpoldinger.
