In the tradition of Jordan Knight developed a great ethnographic interest. This was reflected not only in terms of its many scenes from the life of the sea and fishermen, for example in 1844 created image The drowned fisherman's son (pilotage son ) whose elements were thoroughly prepared through detailed for authenticity attempted studies. It also manifests itself with regard to the particularly fascinating in the 19th century European design Indians, such as the image formed in 1851, the prairie fire. One of his drawings shows how he took part in 1838 at the birthday party of the Belgian painter Auguste Chauvin in disguise, similar in allusion to his Canadian origin with Indian costume and headdress, a character from the novel The Last of the Mohicans. Adelbert von Chamisso's poem speech of the old warrior Colorful Snake in the council of the Creek Indians Knights illustrated with a drawing showing an advisory group and fuming Indians is reflected in more detailed clothing and headdress.

Pictures showing the Knights themselves, can also be found on a leaf in the publication downsides of the Düsseldorf (1844 /45, here with his two daughters in Düsseldorf studio ) with and in Friedrich Bosers friendship gallery of 26 individual portraits of the Düsseldorf School of Painting and friends images show the Düsseldorf artists in gallery hall of the Academy ( 1840-1853 ).
