Henschel Quartet

The Henschel Quartet is a German string quartet that has existed since 1994. It consists of the two siblings Christoph Henschel (violin) and Monika Henschel (viola), cellist Mathias Beyer- Karlshøj and violinist Daniel Bell, who took the place of Markus Henschel in 2011.

Training

Your training received Christoph, Markus and Monika Henschel by Felix Andrievsky, representatives of the Moscow Violin School ( Yampolsky / Yuri Yankelevich ), supplemented by encounters with Max Rostal, and obtained her diploma in 1988 at the Royal College of Music in London. Mathias Beyer- Karlshøj studied with the Swedish cellist Thor Leif Thedeen and received his diploma in 1996 from the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen. An intense musical exchange was also held with Sergiu Celibidache and with Franz Beyer from the Musikhochschule in Munich. For the musical development as an ensemble, especially the London Master Classes and the guest studies at the Musikhochschule in Cologne with the Amadeus Quartet were pioneering. Regular courses for members of the LaSalle Quartet and the Alban Berg, also exerted a strong influence on the Henschel Quartet. In 1994, the ensemble " Quartet -in- Residence " of the Aldeburgh Festival and 1995/ 96 of the Tanglewood Music Festival. There mediated the musicians legends Louis Krasner and Eugene Lehner, who himself worked with composers such as Béla Bartók and Schoenberg, the young quartet immediate insights into the works of the Second Viennese School. Daniel Bell was a member of the Petersen Quartet and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra before he joined the Henschel Quartet in 2011.

Repertoire and premieres

The repertoire of the Henschel Quartet comprises more than 200 works from the classical and romantic, from the 20th century and contemporary music. The Quartet has premiered works by many contemporary composers, by Günter Bialas to Manfred Trojahn and played premieres of rediscovered works of famous composers of the past:

  • 2006: Sergiu Celibidache's concert premiere of " pocket garden " in Munich Herkulessaal together with the boys Munich Philharmonic
  • 2007: world premiere of a string quartet set of Carl Orff Carl Orff in the center, Munich
  • 2008: World premiere of the second string quintet by Max Bruch at the Wigmore Hall in London

For his CD recordings classical / romantic repertoire at SONY BMG, at EMI and Deutsche Grammophon was the Henschel Quartet numerous awards, nominations and awards, including:

In the CD label NEOS Music, founded in 2007, the ensemble has recorded works of the 20th century and contemporary music, including by Derek Smith, Earl Rice Dorff, Andy Evans and Roland Fudge ( BBC Music Magazine Composition Competition for amateurs composers, 2008).

Teaching and community involvement

Since 1998 the Henschel Quartet and teaches regularly gives master classes at universities and music schools, including at MIT in Boston (USA), at Dartington College of Arts ( UK) and at the University of Melbourne ( Australia).

In addition, the Henschel Quartet is committed to the mutual exchange with other ensembles and is committed to create new support structures in chamber music. Since 1997, the quartet each year invites a new colleague for his own ensemble Strings Festival in the Monastery of Blessed city.

From the beginning, the quartet for children and young people began. The non-profit organization "Friends of the Henschel Quartet on the promotion of chamber music " dedicated since 2001 to the promotion of youth, but also the opening and expansion of the chamber music scene. As an ambassador for SOS Children's Villages, the Henschel Quartet with children and youth workshops, concerts and a CD recording in favor of SOS Children's Villages is committed.
