Herbert Newby McCoy

Herbert Newby McCoy ( born June 29, 1870 in Richmond ( Indiana); † May 7, 1945 in Los Angeles ) was an American chemist.

McCoy studied at Purdue University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1893 and in 1893 a Master's degree. In 1898 he received his doctorate at the University of Chicago in chemistry. After that, he was at North Dakota State University activity was Assistant Professor at the University of Utah, taught from 1901 to 1917 at the University of Chicago and then went into industry as Vice President of the Lindsay Light and Chemical Company since 1919 and President of the Carnotite Reduction Company in Chicago.

He has published on physical chemistry, radioactivity and rare earths.

In 1937 he received the Willard Gibbs Medal.

He was married to the chemist Ethel Terry, with whom he also wrote an introduction to the chemistry ( Introduction to General Chemistry 1919).

The Herbert Newby McCoy Award Purdue University is named after him. He is a research award in science for students or faculty members at Purdue University.
