Heribert of Cologne

Heribert (c. 970 in Worms, † March 16, 1021 in Cologne) was 999-1021 Archbishop of Cologne.

Origin

Kinship relations with the extended family of Conradines were suspected because of the ownership and first names. The possession of his father, Hugo, who probably came from the title of count, was mainly in Wormsgau and Einrichgau. Heribert's maternal half-brother was Bishop Henry I of Würzburg. Another brother was Count Gezemann in Werngau. The two bishops of Eichstätt Heribert (1022-1042) and Gezemann (1042 ) were the sons of Count Gezemann in Werngau and thus Heribert's nephew.

Life and work

Heribert's education began in the cathedral school at Worms, and was continued in the Abbey Gorze. After his training, he was provost of Worms. Bruno of Carinthia, who later became Pope Gregory V, visited about the same time as Heribert the Worms Cathedral School.

The Worms bishop and chancellor of Germany Hildebold led Heribert one at the imperial court. 994 rose Emperor Otto III. Heribert chancellor of Italy. This rendered an emperor for the first time this office a German. In 995 he was ordained a priest. Three years later, after Hilde Bolds 's death in 998, was Heribert of Emperor Otto III. appointed Chancellor of Germany. For the first time, the two offices were united in one hand. In this position, Heribert was one of the main sponsors of the Renovatio imperii Romanorum concept of (, renewal of the Roman Empire ').

999 he was weilend on the second Italian campaign, was elected by the chapter to the Archbishop of Cologne. The choice has been confirmed by both the Emperor and the Pope on July 9, 999. It also remembered as Archbishop of Cologne, the two offices Chancellor of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. He received his ordination at Christmas 999 in Cologne Cathedral, before, it is said, he was humble and barefoot drafted in Cologne.

In the presence of the new Archbishop of Cologne Karl grave in Aachen by Emperor Otto III was. opened. He was also there when Emperor Otto III. in January 1002, died at the castle Paterno. He led the corpse of the emperor and the imperial insignia heavy fighting in Aachen. He had sent ahead to the attention of Count Palatine Ezzo The Holy Lance.

The royal election of 1002 supported Heribert Duke Hermann II of Swabia from the family of Conradines. However, this could not prevail, so that Henry II 's successor Otto III. been. Even after the election supported Heribert the Conradine African family several times against Henry II So in 1003 at the Synod of Dietenhofen when he prevented the German bishops at the request of the king declared the marriage of Conrad of Carinthia and Matilda of Swabia for canonically invalid. Even the royal invitation to join the military action against Otto von Hammerstein, Heribert resisted.

After the funeral of Otto III. and the election of a successor Henry II he resigned the chancellorship. Back in Cologne, he founded, as with Otto III. agreed, the abbey Deutz. In 1004 he accompanied the Emperor Henry II on his expedition to Rome, although the ratio of the two contemporaries was said to be cool. The Foundation of the Diocese of Bamberg by Henry II in 1007 was also sponsored by Heribert.

Heribert died on March 16, 1021 in Cologne. He was buried in the abbey founded by him in Deutz.

As a saint

Shortly after Hereward death in 1021 sat at his grave in the Abbey Deutz a veneration of saints, which initially had only local extent, but already found Lantberts of Deutz 1046-1060 literary expression in the hagiographic work, whose addition to a Vita sancti Heri Berti the Miracula sancti Heri Berti also an extensive collection of Heribert miracles during his lifetime and after his death bewirkter miracles and other liturgical texts and hymns written about Heribert.

A formal canonization by the Pope was not common at that time and is not done in the case of Hereward later; the undated Kanonisationsurkunde a Pope " Gregory " for Heribert is a fake from the mid-12th century. It is associated with an intensification of Deutz Heribert worship in the early decades of the 12th century, especially under the abbacy of Rupert Deutz ( 1120-1129 ); Rupert also wrote a Vita sancti Heri Berti, which is based partly on Lantberts work.

The bones solemnly collected on August 30, 1147 the Saints were embedded in the finished around 1175 precious Heribert Shrine, which is located since the late 19th century in the church of St. Heribert New in Cologne- Deutz.

A plaque for Heribert was taken in in the Walhalla near Regensburg.
