Heriger of Lobbes

Heriger of Lobbes (* about 940 in the County of Flanders, † October 31, 1007 in Lobbes ( German Laubach ), Belgium) was a clergyman and composer 990-1007 abbot of the abbey Lobbes in Hainault.

He became a monk and Scholaster ( Head of School ) at the Benedictine Abbey of Liege. 989 he accompanied Notker, the Bishop of Liege and nephew of Emperor Otto I, on his journey to Rome. 990 he was elected to succeed Folcuin abbot of Lobbes. The monastery and its school flourished under his aegis to continue.

Besides his work as a consultant Notker Heriger made ​​himself a name as the author of biographical and hagiographic writings. He also worked as a composer, creating unanimous chants, of which a hymn and two antiphons ( change songs ) have survived.
