Herman, Duke of Carinthia

Hermann ( Herman II ) ( † October 4, 1181 ) from the House of Spannheimer was Duke of Carinthia from 1161 to 1181.

Life and work

Hermann was the younger son of Duke Ulrich I. and Judith, daughter of Herman II, Margrave of Baden.

After his brother Henry 's death in 1161 he was succeeded by the Duke of Carinthia office. He took office as Governor of Gurk, acquired the bailiwicks of the Bamberg goods in Carinthia and successfully fought the bailiwicks about Tiffen and meeting the Patriarch of Aquileia. He had disputes with Margrave Ottokar III. of Styria to the legacy of the great-uncle Bernard of Trixen and with the Heunburgern and Ortenburgers for supremacy in the country.

Duke Hermann died in 1181 and was succeeded by his son Ulrich.

Family

Hermann was at first marriage (from 1141 ) to Maria of Bohemia married, daughter of Duke Sobeslav I., widow of Margrave Leopold IV of Austria (?); second marriage to Agnes († 1182 ), daughter of Duke Henry II, widow of Stephen III. of Hungary. The second marriage produced:

  • Bernhard II (* 1180, † 1256), Duke of Carinthia ( 1202-1256 )
