Herman Fortunatus, Margrave of Baden-Rodemachern

Hermann Fortunat von Baden (* January 23, 1595 in Rastatt, † January 4, 1665 in Kastellaun ) was Margrave of Baden to Rodemachern.

Life

He was a son of Margrave Edward Fortunatus of Baden and Maria von Eicken († April 21, 1636 ), daughter of Jobst von Eicken. The father died in 1600 and his cousins out of the house of Baden- Durlach challenged his own and his brothers inheritance law because the marriage of the father with Maria von Eicken was deemed not to befitting. The guardians, Archduke Albrecht and Count of Isenburg Salentin, sat the Emperor successfully for the right of succession, where politically denominational backgrounds played a role: The Baden-Baden was a Catholic, while the House of Baden- Durlach was Lutheran.

Hermann Fortunat succeeded his childless deceased uncle Philip III. Margrave of Baden- Rodemachern, while his brother William, the Margraviate of Baden -Baden took over.

In the Thirty Years' War he fought first in Spanish, then in the imperial service. In 1633 he was involved in the Battle of Breisach, where his commander Ernesto Montecuculi fell victim.

He died in 1665 in Kastellaun. His tomb is located in the Saint Nicholas Church of Rodemachern. During the construction of the parish church (1779-1783) the tomb was moved from limestone under the Holy Cross altar.
