Hermann Berghaus

Hermann Berghaus ( born November 16, 1828 in Herford, † December 3, 1890 ) was a German cartographer of the 19th century.

Life and work

Hermann Berghaus was born on November 16, 1828, the son of a pastor in Herford. He went to high school in Herford and Halle and in his spare time he occupied himself mainly with his special talent, drawing. His uncle Heinrich Berghaus had in Potsdam founded an art school, where he trained his nephew from 1842-1845 for cartographers. Here he also learned the different projection methods except the art of Kartografierens. After his apprenticeship Berghaus staff in the institution of cartographic publishing bookseller Wilhelm Perthes in Gotha, which then had an international reputation was.

His job was mainly to modernize large maps with additional pages and to be provided with current data. Honors
