Hermann Cremer

Hermann Cremer ( born October 18, 1834 in Unna ( Westphalia ), † October 4, 1903 in Greifswald ) was a German Lutheran theologian.

Life

Cremer studied at the Friedrich -University Halle ( August Tholuck ) and the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen (Johann Tobias Beck). 1859 Cremer was a minister in Ostönnen, in 1870 he went as professor of systematic theology at the University of Greifswald, which he was Rector of 1883/84. About the character and personality of highly divergent statements are to be found.

Cremer transformed while still studying from the Lutheran Pietists biblicists. His main concern was the creation of the Theological dictionary, which he published under the title Biblical Theological Dictionary of the New Testament Gräcität. Even Martin Kähler recognized behind the taxonomist.

Cremer was one of the most important theologians. Calls to Leipzig and Berlin, he refused despite the efforts of Friedrich Althoff and Adolf von Harnack. He is considered the most important head of the so-called Greifswald school. To Greifswald school also included Otto Zöckler, Viktor Schultze, Samuel Oettli and initially even Adolf Schlatter. To Cremers pupils included Erich Schaeder and Wilhelm Lütgert and his son Ernst Cremer ( 1864-1922 ).
