Hermann Kuhnt

Hermann Kuhnt ( born April 14, 1850 in Senftenberg, † October 31, 1925 in Bonn ) was a German ophthalmologist and professor in Jena, Königsberg ( Prussia) and Bonn.

Life

Kuhnt was born the sixth of eight children in the Prussian province of Brandenburg in Senftenberg. The school he attended in Cottbus. Kuhnt studied in Bonn, Berlin and Würzburg medicine. In Bonn, he became in 1870 a member of the Corps Rhenaniastraße.

Rostock and Heidelberg

In 1874 he received his doctorate in Rostock at the Anatomical Institute at Frederick Sigmund Merkel. Subsequently he was assistant to the ophthalmologist Otto Becker at the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Heidelberg.

Professor in Jena, Königsberg and Bonn

In 1880 he went to the Friedrich -Schiller- University of Jena, where he was an associate professor in 1881. Appointed a year later there for the first professor of ophthalmology, he served as Director of the newly established Department of Ophthalmology. Kuhnts plans for its own building at the University Eye Clinic were first implemented by his successor August car man. The new clinic was purchased on 1 October 1898.

In 1892, Kuhnt moved to Königsberg Albertus University and was director of the university eye clinic as the successor of Arthur von Hippel ( 1841-1916 ), who worked for two years there, and Julius Jacobson ( 1828-1889 ), who from 1877 -1889 only professor of established specifically for Ophthalmology University Hospital in Prussia. Kuhnt 1906 /07 Rector of the Albertus University of Königsberg.

In 1907, he finally accepted a call to Bonn.

Importance

As an ophthalmologist Kuhnt made ​​with Paul Junius Trendsetting in the field of macular diagnostics. According to both the Macular Degeneration is named in the final stage. The narrow spaces between the ciliary body and zonula ciliaris also contribute Kuhnts name.
