Hermann Schussler

Hermann Schussler ( in U.S. Schussler ) (* August 4, 1842 in Rastede, † April 27, 1919 in San Francisco ) was a German engineer who built many dams in the United States. He was known by the construction of the water supply system for the mine in Comstock Lode.

Schuessler attended from 1859 to 1862 the Prussian Military Academy in Oldenburg ( Oldenburg). After that, he studied civil engineering in Zurich and Karlsruhe.

In 1864, Schüssler emigrated to California and began working for the water works in San Francisco. He worked on several projects in the San Francisco Bay Area. Worth mentioning are the construction of the Lower Crystal Springs Dam and the dam on the San Andreas Lake, both of which survived the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 without damage. Schuessler was Chief Engineer of Marin County and later of Virginia City. There he built the water supply system for the mine in Comstock Lode. He also built water supply systems in Tuscarora (Nevada ) and Pioche. Also worked on several projects in Hawaii. In 1914 he retired.
