Hernando Siles Reyes

Hernando Siles Reyes ( * August 5, 1882 in Sucre, † November 23, 1942 in Lima) was a Bolivian lawyer and as a politician in the period 1926-1930 the 39th President of Bolivia.

Hernando Siles Reyes was born in 1882 as the son of Adolfo Siles and Remedios Reyes, who belonged to two prestigious families in Chuquisaca. After his legal studies, he was rector of the Bolivian Universidad de San Francisco Javier and founded the Partido Nacionalista (PN), was politically, however, the Partido Socialista Republicano ( PSR) under Bautista Saavedra close that came to power in 1920. As Saavedras successor Siles won the elections of 1926 Saavedra brother as Vice President, Abdon Saavedra.

As president, he quickly developed into a highly respected politician, especially when he broke and both his predecessor as president and his vice president sent into exile with the Saavedra family.

However, at the same time his presidency was both economically heavily impacted by the far-reaching effects of the global economic crisis of 1929, on the other hand, politically burdened by the increasing tensions with neighboring Paraguay, which led between the two countries in the following years to the Chaco War.

In the period following President Siles sent further political opponents into exile and thus expanded its policy space, in the following year 1930, however, came to the ordeal, as Siles wanted to extend his term of office without authorization, subject to the requirement in this way the increasing economic and international political crisis want to master. This was all that needed his opponents. Through his resignation on May 1930 and his escape to Chile 28, he escaped the impending coup, but his cabinet remained in office for the time being. His successor, General Carlos Blanco Galindo dismissed the Cabinet in June of the same year and continued to 1931 for new elections, which by Daniel Salamanca Urey ( Partido Republicano - Genuino ) were obtained.

Hernando Siles lived until his death in November 1942, especially in Lima in exile, where he was in 1934 appointed by President Salamanca to the Bolivian ambassador, a post which he held for seven years.

Hernando Siles had six children:
