Herne Power Plant

F2

The Herne cogeneration plant is a coal-fired power plant of STEAG. It is located in Baucau, a suburb of Herne in North Rhine -Westphalia and employs around 250 staff.

General

The four power generating units have an electrical output of 950 megawatts. The power plant produces about 5.2 billion kWh of electricity (energy requirement of about 1.3 million households ) and 800 million kWh of district heating, which are fed into the district heating network management of the Ruhr district heating grid. The annual coal consumption is about 2.0 million tons. The annual CO2 emissions are according to the European Pollutant Emission Register (EPER 2004) 4.51 million tons. The coal supply is via the Rhine -Herne Canal, also taken from the cooling water needed and is reinitiated.

History

The first two blocks were built in 1962/63 and provided each 150 MW. 1966, block 3 with 300 MW added (1987 for district coupling rebuilt ). Block 3 has an efficiency of only 30 percent.

In 1988, the power plant will be retrofitted with a flue gas desulfurization. A fourth block of 500 MW was added in 1989 and is also used for district heating. In connection with this new building in 1984 of the 300 meter high chimney and the large cooling tower ( 130 m), which currently characterize the image of the power plant was built. This new stone already replaced three old chimneys which were subsequently demolished. The oldest Unit 1 was shut down in 2000, but not yet demolished.

New building block 5

In the fall of 2006, the operator ( STEAG ) announced to build together with local partners a fifth power plant unit with a capacity of 750 MW and a net efficiency of 45%. Construction of the € 800 million expensive project should begin in the summer of 2008, the commissioning of the block was planned for autumn 2011. The project " Herne 5" saw the construction of a 180 m high cooling tower before, about the the flue gases should be derived, the establishment of a separate chimney would have been not necessary. For the operation of block 5 50 new jobs would be created.

The construction of " Herne 5" but was postponed by the power plant operators until further notice. The reason Evonik calls the EU Commission's proposal is to be extended after the under the emissions trading scheme from 2012 trading in carbon credits on new installations.
