Herwig Görgemanns

Herwig Görgemanns ( born September 2, 1931 in the Alps ) is a German classical scholar.

Life

With contributions to the interpretation of Plato's prefectures he received his doctorate in 1959 in classical philology in Würzburg. With studies on Plutarch's dialogue " De facie in orbe luna" he habilitated in 1965 in Heidelberg. His teacher in Heidelberg was Franz Dirlmeier. 1967/1968 he was a Fellow at the Center for Hellenic Studies of Harvard University.

Görgemanns 1972 was appointed Professor of Classical Philology at the University of Heidelberg and professor emeritus in 1997. The focus of his work lies in the field of Greek philosophy, especially Platonism. He expressed, inter alia, to on Plato's Atlantis tale in which he suspected a historical core.

Together with the church historian Heinrich Karpp (1908-1997) he translated Peri archon / De principiis, " the most fascinating works of Origen, which to this day is attracts the most attention " (A. Prince ).

One of his students is the Göttingen Plutarch scientist Rainer Hirsch - Luipold.
