The Smooth Hawkweed ( Hieracium laevigatum ) is a plant of the genus hawkweed ( Hieracium ) in the sunflower family ( Asteraceae). It is widespread in Eurasia.

Description

The Smooth Hawkweed is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches the plant height of 30 to 120 cm. This Hemikryptophyt forms from an underground rhizome. The leaves are sessile or short-stalked, and not amplexicaul. The pure green, gland -less leaves are lanceolate, oblong- lanceolate to elliptic- lanceolate and are three to eight times as long as wide. The lower leaf surface is somewhat lighter than the upper leaf surface and has a more or less indistinct venation on. The central stem leaves have a wedge-shaped, sometimes slightly rounded Spreitengrund. During the heyday no basal leaves are usually present.

The cups are borne in paniculate to racemose, not doldenartigen total inflorescences. They have a cylindrical, hairy shell of blunt union, irregularly arranged like roof tiles, not significantly projecting externally variable poor to almost abundant glandular bracts. The flower heads contain only yellow, fünfzipfelige ray florets.

The flowering period extends over the months of June to August.

Ecology

The flowers are pollinated by bees, hoverflies and butterflies.

Occurrence

The Smooth Hawkweed arrives in Europe from the boreal zone southward to the submeridionale zone before, while also montane ( mountainous ) terrain is populated. As localities are given: Iceland, the Scandinavian countries, the Baltic countries, the British Isles, the Faroe Islands, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France, Spain, Poland, the former Czechoslovakia, the former Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, northeastern Turkey, Belarus, Ukraine, the European part of Russia, the Caucasus, Western and Eastern Siberia. In some moderate climate areas of North America Hieracium is laevigatum a neophyte.

In Germany, the Smooth Hawkweed is widespread in all provinces. It is to be found scattered in the Alps and the foothills of the Alps, in the Swabian Alb region and the western Schleswig -Holstein only.

The Smooth Hawkweed colonized light deciduous and pine forests, thickets, forest edges, meadows, silicate skimmed lawns and ruderal areas. It is mostly exposed to the full sunlight. The sites are also characterized mostly by moderate heat, while the soils little to no lime content, moderate humidity (no moisture, not regularly dehydration ) that low pH ( acidic) and very low nitrogen content.

Taxonomy
