Hilary Marquand

Hilary Adair Marquand PC ( * December 24, 1901, † November 6, 1972 ) was a British economist, university lecturer and Labour Party politician.

Life

After visiting the Cardiff High School, he studied history and economics at University College, Cardiff, and was after graduation 1926-1930 worked as a lecturer in economics at the University of Birmingham. Following this he took in 1930 to the offer of a professorship of Industrial Relations at University College Cardiff and taught there until 1945.

He also served in 1931 and 1936, two industrial Befragunge in south Wales and was 1932-1933 on a research visit to the U.S., where he studied industrial relations. Later, he was from 1938 to 1939 again as a visiting professor of economics at the University of Wisconsin in the United States before he was after his return 1940-1941 Acting Head ( Principal ) of the Board of Trade. After that, he was from 1941 to 1942 Deputy Controller in the department of Wales in the Ministry of Labour and then from 1943 to 1944 employment consultant in the production department.

Marquand was first elected in the general election of July 5, 1945 as the candidate of the Labour Party as a delegate in the House of Commons and represented there initially until February 1950 the constituency of Cardiff East before after the general election of 23 February 1950 to November he 1961 interests of the constituency of Middlesbrough East.

After the election of the Labour Party at the general election in 1945 he was first appointed by Prime Minister Clement Attlee to the Secretary of State for overseas trade, before he until 1948 as Paymaster General ( Paymaster General ) was 1948-1951 Minister for pensions after use in 1947. He most recently was Attlee in 1951 for a short time health minister in the government.

After leaving the government, he gave lectures on economic and industrial issues in India, Pakistan, Ceylon, the Caribbean and Finland and was next 1957-1959 Member of the Assemblies of Europe and the Western European Union ( WEU).

After retiring from the House of Commons In 1961 he was director of the International Institute for Labour Studies, Geneva, and was 1965-1968 Vice Chairman of the National Prices and Incomes Commission ( National Board for Prices and Incomes ).

His son David Marquand was also lower house MP for the Labour Party, while his younger son Richard Marquand as a film director led, among other director on such films as The Needle and The Return of the Jedi.
