Hladovka

Hladovka (Hungarian Hladovka, Polish Glodowka ) is a municipality in the north of Slovakia with 1015 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). It belongs to Okres Tvrdošín, kraj part of Žilinský.

Geography

The municipality is located in the upper parts of the basin Orava kotlina the creek Jelešňa, near the Polish border. North of the abandoned railway line extending large-scale peat bogs. The center is located at an altitude of 756 m nm and is located 11 km from Trstená as well as 23 kilometers from Zakopane (PL).

History

Hladovka was founded around 1590 and was called at the beginning Jelesnia, probably derived from the name of the stream. The Magyarized equivalent was Illésna ( 1598 mentions ). Nevertheless, in the name of the local population Hladovka was consistently, by the last name of the founder, a Schultheißes named Kristof Hlad and not, as one might expect, according to the Slovak term for hunger ( Slow hlad ) or even hunger strike ( Slow Hladovka ).

The original inhabitants were engaged in agriculture and linen weaving. In the late 17th and early 18th century the city suffered during the Kuruzzenkriegen and wanderings of the robbers. 1828 are listed 128 houses and 732 inhabitants.

After the collapse of Austria - Hungary, the in- county Arwa place came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia. In the years 1920-24 and 1938-39 Hladovka belonged to Poland (see also Czechoslovak -Polish border conflicts, Location No. 4).
