HMS Sandwich

Six ships of the Royal Navy have been named HMS Sandwich; a seventh construction was started but not completed.

It was named after the port city of Sandwich, or a respective title holders of the title Earl of Sandwich, in particular Edward Montagu, 1st Earl of Sandwich or the First Lord of the Admiralty John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich.

  • HMS Sandwich ( 1679 ), a ship of the line with 90 guns. Served as Hulk 1752, scrapped 1770
  • HMS Sandwich (1759 ), a ship of the line with 98 guns. In 1780 it was converted into a floating battery. demolition in 1810
  • HMS Sandwich ( 1780), was acquired as a civilian ship Majority, equipped with 24 guns and renamed HMS Sandwich. 1781 was captured by the French.
  • HMS Sandwich ( 1804), 1804 acquired cutter, equipped with 10 cannons and sold in 1805
  • HMS Sandwich ( 1809), designed with 74-gun ship of the line. Keel was laid in 1809, demolition of the building in 1811
  • HMS Sandwich ( 1928), a sloop with 2 x 4 cannons, sell for demolition in 1946
