The Academy of Visual Arts (HGB ) in Leipzig, with its founding in 1764 one of the oldest public art schools in Germany. Approx. 530 students are currently studying in the four courses painting / graphics, book art / graphic design, photography and media art. In the summer of 2009 also the new Master's program in Cultures of the Curatorial was founded. This continuing education offering is unique in Germany and combines application -oriented research practice with academic reflection. It is aimed at people with different disciplinary and professional backgrounds: the various arts - visual arts, dance, theater, film and music - cultural education, the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences.

History

On February 6, 1764 founded Prince Francis Xavier of Saxony as an administrator for his nephew, the still immature Elector of Saxony, Friedrich August III. (1750-1827), in Leipzig, an academy for painting, which he imputed the Art Academy in Dresden.

The Drawing Academy was opened in autumn 1764 in the Leipzig district office building. In the summer of 1765 they moved to the west wing of the electoral Pleissenburg. Later they expanded into the subscription, Malerey and Architectur - Academie ( Art Academy ).

By 1835, led the establishment the name Academy of Fine Arts. In addition to the director, there was a teacher of architecture and two teachers from the free hand drawing. The instruction was free.

In 1863 the architecture department was dissolved, the remaining divisions were reorganized in 1871. As of 1876, the facility was known as the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and Arts and Crafts School. 1893 Department of photographic reproduction process has been established, which contributed to a new focus of the Academy. As a result, closed 1894, the Department of Arts and Crafts architectural and 1896, the department of sculpture.

In 1900, the Leipzig Academy was transformed into the Royal Academy of Graphic Arts and Book Trade. Since 1897, the sculptor, painter and graphic artist Max Klinger ( 1857-1920 ) Professor at the Academy.

After the dissolution of the kingdom of Saxony and the formation of the Free State of Saxony, Leipzig Academy bore the name of National Academy of Graphic Arts and Book Trade. In the summer semester 1938 got 286 students ( exclusively male ) at the Art Academy. This made it to Vienna ( 1,005 students) and Berlin (309 students) third largest art school of the German Empire.

On April 26, 1947, the facility was reopened as the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig. From 1946 to 1949, Walter Arnold ( 1909-1979 ), professor at the university. In 1951, Albert was Kapr professor of writing and book design.

The Saxon Higher Education Restructuring Act of 10 April 1992 confirmed the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig, Leipzig while other universities were dissolved or merged after the turn.

Among art critics worldwide include the Commercial Code of the most important in painting and graphic German art academies (2008 ). A significant contribution to this state, the so-called New Leipzig School within the painting. As its most important representative of the true painter Neo Rauch, who studied at the university and there leads a master student class.
