Höhlensteintal

The Landro (Italian Val di Landro ) is a southern tributary of the Alta Pusteria in the east of South Tyrol in Italy. It is drained by the upper reaches of the Rienz that springs beneath the Three Peaks. The valley is approximately 15 km long and flows in Dobbiaco in the Val Pusteria, near the Drauquelle.

Topographically separates the Höhlenstein the Sesto Dolomites Nature Park with the Three Peaks of the Dolomites with the Lago di Fanes- Senes- Prague, the German language from the Ladin language area.

The Talverlauf begins at the northern slope of Monte Cristallo ( 3216 m ) at Pass In Gemärk near Schluderbach (approx. 1450 m), which leads over to Cortina. After flowing through the Dürr lake the creek crosses the Dolomite cave, which gave its name to the valley, and the valley narrows between Dürrenstein ( 2839 m ) in the west and Haunold ( 2943 m) in the east. A few kilometers upstream of the mouth into the wide Pusteria is the famous lake of Dobbiaco.

In Landro there are two locks of the fortifications of the Vallo Alpino (Alpine Wall in South Tyrol). One is located around the lake of Dobbiaco, the other in stone cave. The northern barrier was built after 1945 and was integrated into the NATO defense concept. Today is the observant hikers in the valley numerous traces of these fortifications.
