Homburg Castle

The Homburg Castle is a castle in North Rhine-Westphalia Nümbrecht in Oberbergisch district.

History and Architectural History

In 1276 is the " Homburg " first mentioned. Godfrey I of Sayn from the House of Sponheim ( 1247-1283 / 1284) transferred his " castrum Homburg " the King Rudolf of Habsburg to place themselves under his protection. He received the castle back as hereditary fief. The plant was the residence of the Counts of imperial rule Homburg, until it was claimed in 1806 by Napoleon incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Berg.

From 1635 built Count Ernst von Sayn -Wittgenstein, the castle as how it is still visible today. 100 years later, the line of Sayn -Wittgenstein- Berleburg took over the administration, then fell into the buildings. Only in 1904 the decline was stopped, and in 1926 moved into a vested by Hermann Conrad museum 's premises, today's Museum of the Oberbergische circle.

In an excavation, a stone erected residential tower diameter of approximately 12.5 meters was excavated in 1999. Experts estimate that date it in the 11th century.

Beginning of 2005 was decided by the council of the Oberbergische circle the expansion of the castle. These plans include, among other things, the extension of the Red House and the construction of a central cash register and toilet area. The old orangery has been torn down and replaced by a new two-storey administration and exhibition building.

As part of the Local 2010, the project received the A- stamp. Before the demolition of the Orangery excavation work was carried out through the Rhenish Office for Monument. On 4 May 2012 was made on the grounds laid the foundation stone for the new glass pavilion in place of the old orangery.

In the immediate vicinity is a saw and flour mill with Backhaus. Moreover, in the former tithe barn of the Castle, the Red House, the seat of the Biological Station Upper Mountain, whose main tasks are the scientific and practical care of Oberbergisches nature reserves and various landscaping projects.

Nature trail Schloss Homburg

The nature trail was established in 2004. This is a " Biological Station Upper Mountain" by the and the protection of German Forests initiated trail.

The hiking and adventure trail begins at the castle and performs Homburg Bröl and Huppichteroth, goes to the historic mill Holstein and the thicknesses stones pass back to the castle Homburg. At the distance of nine stations are so far been established, to which the wanderers the nature around Homburg Castle and the Brölauen is brought near.
