Honda of the UK Manufacturing
The Honda of the UK Manufacturing Ltd. , Internally called HUM, is a set up in 1985, subsidiary of the Japanese Honda company with corporate headquarters in Swindon, England. The premises currently covers an area of 370 acres on the plants for automobile manufacturing and engine design, as well as a test track operated. The company's annual production capacity is 250,000 units, which are sold in Europe and in North America. A total of 60 markets to be supplied from the English production. Some 3,400 employees work for the company. The company itself started its operations as an importer of motor vehicles, until 10 October 1992, the production could be included in a separate work. Inside the vehicle identification number, the plant uses the World Manufacturer Code SHH and the factory code U for Swindon in eleventh position.
Company History
The first attempts to manifest itself in the UK market Honda made in 1979 in a joint venture with the Rover Group. In cooperation we eventually chose Swindon as a future location. Contributed to this choice have a good infrastructure with regard to very good connections to several lying near ports, a connection to the main regional Motorways, as well as at the London Heathrow Airport. Swindon was also well known for his former production site of the Great Western Railway, which enjoyed an outstanding reputation in engineering.
The current campus was purchased in the same year by the Vickers Supermarine Limited. It was an airfield whose start and runway has been converted to today's 1.4 km long test track. With an investment of 300 million pounds was in late 1992, after completion of construction, the first plant to start its work.
The previous models of collaboration with Rover were mounted in the factory at Longbridge. Some of the models, there was the so-called badge engineering as Triumph and Rover models. In 1999 this cooperation was terminated by Honda.
The first model produced in the United Kingdom was the small car Honda Civic, followed by the Honda Accord and the Honda Ballade. The Japanese model versions initially only occupied a marginal position, the sister models showed a greater international popularity. Especially in former colonial areas, these models were quite popular. It was only with the decline of the mid-nineties restricted the Honda Autoteilezulieferungen to the now BMW related work drastically, so that most of the models had to be subjected under own direction facelifts. In late 1999, Honda finished then the cooperation and operates since then only a separate and independent production of its vehicles.
1989 also a motor manufacture has been set up at the factory. 365,000 engines will be produced here per year.
The second plant, which had been built over the millennium, began its work on 21 July 2001. Thus, the capacity of 150,000 units has been increased to 250,000 per year. Here then the production of the Honda Civic and the now-defunct Honda Accord was taken. The main car models from the second album, however, are internationally marketed units of the Honda CR- V and the Honda Civic Type R. The new model of the company is built since 2009 Honda Jazz.
In the summer of 2009, the company made a four-month long -running work break. Reason for this measure was a global decline in orders and sales within the first quarter.
