Honningsvåg

The town Honningsvåg ( Sat. Honnesváhki, or even Áváhki ) is part of the municipality of Nordkapp in Fylke (district) Finnmark in northern Norway. In the important fishing settlement on the island Magerøya 2367 inhabitants ( 2009).

Honningsvåg is not only run daily from the ships of the Hurtigruten, but is due to its convenient location to the North Cape, only about 40 kilometers away in the summer months port of numerous cruise ships. At the same time Valan Airport is operated on scheduled services of the airline Widerøe. Thus, one can reach the island of the North Cape by plane.

The nearby North Cape and the tourism related, in addition to fishing, the main source of income of the municipality.

Honningsvåg applies since the 1990s falsely to be the northernmost city in the world, although there are some cities that are further north such as Barrow ( Alaska). Honningsvåg has city status since 1998. Due to an administrative agreement between Hammerfest and Honningsvåg the city Hammerfest may continue to advertise with the slogan " northernmost city in Europe ". Honningsvåg advertises with the North Cape.

At the end of the Second World War were all places on the island Magerøya completely destroyed by the German army because of arranged by Adolf Hitler scorched earth policy to the church of 1884.
