Hordeum jubatum

Mane barley ( Hordeum jubatum )

The Mane barley ( Hordeum jubatum ) is a plant of the genus Hordeum within the family of grasses ( Poaceae ).

Description

Mane barley is up to 60 centimeters tall -growing, perennial of barley. The leaves are green and soft drooping in the summer.

It has silky silver ear tufts, the color turns to summer's end beige and which often have a reddish tint. The six to seven nodding flower spikes have long awns. Mane barley blooms in midsummer.

The Mane Barley is a tetraploid grass, ie the chromosomes of each cell is twice ( 2n = 28). Has come about through the crossing ( hybridization ) of a Central Asian of barley with the North American species Hordeum brachyantherum (or so closely related but now extinct species).

Occurrence

The Mane barley comes originally from northern North America (Alaska and Canada) and East Asia ( Northeast Siberia), but is now beyond cultivated in gardens and is often reintroduced from these cultures, so this type today in many regions of the world as " weed "occurs. The Mane barley prefers sunny locations and is salt tolerant.
