The Horizon Common New Generation Frigate ( CNGF ) is a class frigate of the French and Italian navies. The Italian ships called Andrea Doria (D 553 ) and Caio Duilio (D 554), the French Forbin (D 620) and Chevalier Paul ( D 621 ). In both navies they are now classified as Destroyer ( Destroyer ).

Development

After the failure of the NFR -90 project, the UK, France and Italy started in 1993 with the plans, of which Great Britain in 1999 but withdrew due to industrial policy differences (see Daring class). France and Italy have continued the project and initially built two ships. The works contracts worth 2.8 billion euros have gone to the parity company Horizon SAS ( Thales, DCN, Finmeccanica, Fincantieri ).

The French and Italian destroyer are identical to 90%. It is primarily about management and air defense ships, meaning that they are intended to function in a smaller naval force as flagships and are able to defend against attacks from the air. Moreover, they are also designed for surface warfare and anti-submarine - hunting. A lighter version of this multi-purpose vessels, the so-called " FREMM frigates ", are intended to replace various older frigate classes in French and Italian Navy.

The two Italian ships of the Horizon - class replace the two already decommissioned destroyer of the Audace class. Originally, the two destroyers of the De la Penne class would later be replaced by two other ships of the Horizon class. Similar plans also existed in France. Plans for additional ships a possibly evolved Horizon - class have now been abandoned because of financial difficulties in both countries. Instead, we think now of an air defense version of the FREMM frigates.

Units

With the construction of the first modules of the Forbin and the Andrea Doria was launched in 2002, the keel was laid in 2004, testing began in 2006. Chevalier Paul and Caio Duilio was followed about a year later. By " putting into service" is meant in the list below the achievement of full operational capability (Full Operational Capability ) and inclusion in active fleets.
