FREMM is a class of frigates that rely France and Italy since 2007 in a joint project for their respective naval forces and for export. The name stands for the French FREMM multi-mission Fregate or Italian Fregata Multi- Missione.

Versions

The FREMM frigates are a variant of the French-Italian management and air defense ships of the Horizon Project. The FREMM frigates will be built in two versions: " ASW " (Anti- Submarine Warfare in France: "ASM" ) and "GP / LA " (General Purpose / Land Attack, France: " AVT " - Action Vers la Terre ). The French Armaris consortium (consisting of the Thales Group and DCN) began in 2007 with the construction of eleven FREMM frigates for the French Navy. Originally 17 ships were planned, of which eight and nine ASM AVT. They were originally supposed to replace both the frigate classes Tourville and Georges Leygues, as well as the Corvette Class D' Estienne d' Orves.

In Italy Sistemi Navali Orizzonte is, a consortium consisting of Fincantieri and Finmeccanica, ten FREMM frigates build (4 ASW and 6 GP / LA), the frigates the Maestrale class and the Artigliere class will replace in the Italian Navy. Of the planned ships are six firm orders.

Since no other ships have been ordered by the Horizon - class financial reasons, it is now planning an air defense variant of the FREMM frigates, which is referred to in France as FREDA ( Frégates de défense aériennes ). If the two original versions of a Vertical Launching System type Sylver A50 (instead of A43 ) installed, even launchers from Aster 30 can be fired. Thanks to this longer-range missiles and a new active version of the multifunction radar Empar the frigates in the standard versions are also full-fledged air defense ships. By Sylver A70 VLS system, the GP / LA- ships can use cruise missiles of the type Scalp Naval.

Units

France France - Aquitaine class

Eight ships were ordered on 16 November 2005. The French Government had announced in its defense white paper in 2008, be limited to a total of eleven instead of the previously planned 17 units. Nine ships were to be built first in the ASW / ASM version, the last two units in the air defense variant FREDA to replace the two destroyers of the Cassard class. The order for the last three frigates was on 8 October 2009 on the occasion of the keel laying of Normandy.

The first eight units are named after French regions. ( The eventful history of Alsace and Lorraine is also reflected by the fact that there were these names even when a German naval vessels that SMS Elsass and SMS Lorraine. ) Aquitaine was delivered in 2012 to the Marine Nationale and is up to the commissioning yet tested. As mid-2013 was announced by the government, is stretched budget reasons, the production rate on a ship every 14 months, and already the ships built 7 and 8 instead as ASW frigates in the FREDA version.

The configuration of the last three units whose delivery is to take place 2013-2025, is set in 2016, possibly there will be technical innovations.

Italy Italy - Bergamini class

In Italy, this program also runs under the name Rinascimento class. As for the name, the ships are in the succession of classes Bergamini and Alpino. A total of six ships were ordered two more in 2013 introduced and financed in the budget planning. A large part of the cost of the FREMM program takes over the Italian Ministry of Economic Affairs, which wants to access the ailing shipbuilding industry in Liguria under the arms. Whether the options are converted on the last two of the ten planned frigates in firm orders, is still open.

Established in 2005, commissioned first contract section comprises two ships:

The second contract section was commissioned in 2008 and comprises four units.

In the frigate Carabinieri emphasis was placed on a launch in 2014, because the Carabinieri celebrate its 200th anniversary this year.

Note: The Bugsektionen be prefabricated at Fincantieri operating in neighboring Muggiano.

Morocco Morocco - Aquitaine class

The Moroccan Navy ordered 2007 ASW frigate. When Mohammed VI (code D601 ) is the second originally intended for the French Navy ship. The ship was placed in Brest on 30 January 2014 in service.
