History

During the Budapest Millennium Exhibition 1896 in celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the Magyar conquest Parliament to establish the heroes of Hungarian history, a memorial decided. With the implementation of the Millennium Monument, the architect Albert Schickedanz and the sculptor György Zala were commissioned. Schickedanz also designed the two museum buildings flanking the square on both sides. 1929, 30 years after the start of construction, the construction was at the Heldenplatz end.

Again and again the Heldenplatz over the years was the stage for significant events in the history of Hungary. Millennium Monument

Colonnade

The Colonnade is a semi-circular, decorated colonnade, which serves as a pantheon of Hungarian history. Between the columns you will find statues of rulers and important historical figures of Hungary from the beginnings in Europe until the end of the 19th century.

Kunsthalle ( Műcsarnok )

The Kunsthalle (Hungarian: Műcsarnok ) with its Corinthian colonnades houses important temporary exhibitions of contemporary art, it was completed in 1896.

Museum of Fine Arts ( Museum of Fine Arts )

The museum was completed in 1906 and houses the most important collection of non- Hungarian art in Budapest. It presents a wide range of artistic periods, from a small Egyptian collection on ancient Greek and Roman art, to the Renaissance and modernity. Thus, the Gallery of the Old Masters has the largest collection of Spanish artists outside the Prado. The museum has a collection of graphic art works by Marc Chagall, Lucas Cranach, Albrecht Durer, Pablo Picasso, Nicolas Poussin, Raphael, Rembrandt van Rijn, Peter Paul Rubens and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. This collection is, however, only presented in sections and then in the context of special exhibitions.

City ​​Park

The City Park, which is located directly behind the Heroes' Square, was once a swamp. Today it is one of the most visited parks in the city. He was, like many other parks also applied as an English landscape park and today includes museums, sports facilities, a bathroom and an animal park. On an island in the lake of the park stands the castle Vajdahunyad. The castle was, like other buildings on the island also planned in 1896 as a replica of historic buildings. It was decided partly to build and maintain the building.
