Hospet or Hosapete ( Kannada: ಹೊಸಪೇಟೆ Hosapete [ hosʌpe ʈe ː ] ) is a town in the Indian state of Karnataka with around 206,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ).

Hospet is located in Bellary district about 350 kilometers north of Bangalore and 60 kilometers west of the district capital Bellary at an altitude of approximately 480 meters on the Deccan Plateau in the eastern Zentralkarnataka. Hospet is the main town of the same name taluks (sub - district ). A few kilometers north of the city flows the Tungabhadra River, which is dammed west of Hospet to Tungabhadra Dam. Twelve kilometers north-east of Hospet lies the ruins Hampi, the former capital of the Vijayanagar Empire.

Located at the crossroads of National Highways 13 and 63 and the railway line from Hubli to Guntakal, Hospet has good transport links. The city itself has to have no special sights, Hospet plays but as a starting point for a visit to the World Heritage Site Hampi some tourist role. The Muslim Muharram festival is celebrated with fire runners and other attractions.

The area around Hospet is rich in iron ore deposits. Since the turn of the millennium there has been a significant mining boom, which has led to enormous environmental problems.

The city was of Krishnadeva Raya (1509-1529), a prominent king of the kingdom of Vijayanagar, built in memory of his mother Nagaladevi. The town was originally Nagalapura.

The name Hospet or Hosapete means to the local language Kannada " new city ". On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Karnataka in 2006, the state government decided, following a proposal of the writer UR Ananthamurthy to change the English name of 13 cities in Karnataka in its Kannada name forms. This should be renamed to Hospet Hosapete. Since the Indian central government to the name change has not yet been approved, the renaming process is not yet complete but.
