The square is a popular meeting place and there are also regular weekly markets held. In the vicinity is the same subway station.

History

The name Hötorget is already known from the forties of the 17th century. Just south of the square was a plant for dressage horses and near arose workshops where sculptures were cast. One of the acting here was sculptor Johan Tobias Sergel, and the point of his studio today is a statuette he created.

The place itself has long been a market place but in 1856 moved to the trading of logs, hay and straw to the nearby Norrmalmstorg. In the year 1880-84 the market hall was built Hotorgshallen. 1914, the trade was banned in fresh meat of larger animals such as cattle, pigs and sheep, and a little later we also made the trading of smaller livestock and other food a. These products are available from now on in the new wholesale market hall ( Centalsaluhallen ) in the vicinity of today's main train station. What remains is still trading in vegetables, flowers, garden products and other clothing accessories.

The buildings with stalls and craft workshops from the 18th and 19th centuries existed until about 1920. 1916, the department store PUB was the entrepreneur Paul Urban Bergström. The concert hall was built 1923-1926 under the architect Ivar Tengbom. The building is one of the most important examples of the Swedish neoclassicism this time. Before the concert house is a group of sculptures by the sculptor Carl Milles.

The major redesign of the Stockholm City in the fifties and sixties of the 20th century gave the southern part of the square a completely new look, while the other parts have retained their looks virtually unchanged.
