Houat

The Ile d' Houat is a French island and a municipality with 249 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Morbihan in the Brittany region.

The nearly three mile island located in the bay of Quiberon, at the entrance of the Gulf of Morbihan.

You reach the island by ferry from Quiberon or from Vannes with catamarans. Island port is Port-Saint -Gildas, a small fishing village. The inhabitants of the island are called Houatais.

Worth seeing are the dunes beach Treach -er- Goured and the lookout point Beg-er - Vachif. On the island of Menhir de la Vierge is ( the Virgin ). The island is Handlungsort of the detective novel "The Portrait" by the English writer Iain Pears.

In the neighborhood of Belle -Île and Île d' Hœdic lie. Presumably, the island is identical with the island mentioned in ancient geography Siata.

The island forms the municipality of the same name. The majority of the population lives in the village in the northeast of the island. The rest of the island is built low and uninhabited in winter.
