Howard Shoup

Howard Shoup (* August 29, 1903, † 29 May 1987) was an American costume designer who was nominated five times for an Oscar for Best Costume Design, and thus in addition to Patricia Norris and Piero Tosi is one of those, the most common in this category were nominated without receiving an Oscar.

Biography

Shoup began his career as a costume designer in 1937 for the film Her Husband 's Secretary and was involved in his 30-year career at the base of over 160 films.

At the Academy Awards in 1960, he was first nominated for the Oscar for Best Costume Design, and indeed for the black and white film The Man from Philadelphia ( 1959). Other Oscar nominations in the category of Best Costume Design in black and white films followed in 1961 for JD, the Killer, 1962 Claudelle and her lover (1961 ), 1965 for the Prince Consort in the White House (1964 ) and most recently at the Academy Awards in 1966 for Nymphomania (1965).

Other well-known films to which he contributed the costumes were a little house in the sky (1943 ), The House of Wax (1953 ), Frankie and his cronies (Ocean 's Eleven, 1960 ) and Cool Hand Luke (1967).

During his career he worked there along with film directors such as Vincent Sherman, Budd Boetticher, Gordon Douglas, Curtis Bernhardt, Walter Grauman, André De Toth, Lewis Milestone, Stuart Rosenberg and Vincente Minnelli.
