Howrah ( Bengali: হাওড়া, Howrah, English: Howrah ) is a city in the state of West Bengal in India with about one million inhabitants ( 2011 census ) on the western bank of the Hooghly, a tributary of the Ganges estuary. It is the capital of the district of the same name. Howrah is located directly opposite the city of Kolkata ( Calcutta), and is part of their agglomeration.

Howrah is connected by three bridges Kolkata; one of which is the striking Rabindra Setu ( Howrah Bridge ), one of the landmarks of Kolkata. It is considered the busiest bridge in the world. The station " Howrah station" is Kolkata's main connection to southern and western India; he belongs to Eastern Railway, one of 16 regional companies of Indian Railways.

1785 was at the point Haoras still a small village, but quickly developed due to the proximity to Kolkata. Jute and cotton spinning and weaving mills dominated and made it an important station of the then East Indian Railway on Allahabad in the central and western provinces of India. Today, Howrah is an industrial city with metal and textile industries and has a yard and a river port.

Howrah has the oldest botanical garden of India ( Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden). It was founded in 1786 and its main attraction is a 200 year old banyan tree, the second largest of its kind in India. The now grown in the regions around Darjeeling and Assam tea was introduced here first and cultured.

Another important institution in the city area and the largest tourist attraction is Belur Math in the north Haoras where the Ramakrishna Mission has its headquarters.
