Huaraz

Huaraz ( 55,000 inhabitants; 119,000 inhabitants in the agglomeration ) is a city of the South American Andean country of Peru and the capital of the Ancash region, about 450 km north of Lima in the Andes located ( 3100 m). The city has grown with Independencia to agglomerate Huaraz.

Location

Huaraz is the center of the agriculturally important Callejón de Huaylas valley, and a starting point for the adjacent high mountain region with Peru's Cordillera Blanca 's highest mountain Huascaran ( 6768 m). Huaraz was hit four times in the 20th century by avalanches that have rolled over from the Cordillera Blanca out of the city.

Tourism

Huaraz is the largest city in Santa valley and important starting point for exploring trips to the Cordillera Blanca.

7 km north of the city lies Willkawayin, a 1000 year old temples and fortifications of heavy megalithic blocks. Due to the structure of the building and the exterior and interior decorations, it is believed that Willkawayin has been built at the time of the Wari culture, one of the pre- Inca cultures of South America Regional, the. During the period from about 600 to 1100 AD the coast and the western Andean region of Peru today dominated.

Destruction 1941

In the early morning of December 13, 1941 a giant ice tower in the 23 km northeast of the city fell to 4566 m located Palcacocha Lake and led to the break of Moränenwalls which limited the lake valley. The tidal wave broke the downhill lie Jiracocha Lake, plunged down the valley and tore Cohup earth, plants and rocks with it. Within 15 minutes, the mudslide reached the city of Huaraz, where against 6:45 clock around 400,000 cubic meters of rubble material destroyed large parts of the city and 5,000 to 7,000 people killed.

Destruction 1970

Huaraz was born on May 31, 1970 severely damaged by an earthquake, in which an estimated 10,000 people were killed. The city, however, was again completely rebuilt and underwent particularly since the late 1990s, a strong rebound by year-round tourism ( mountaineering and trekking).
