Huascarán National Park

The Huascaran National Park comprises the Andean territory beyond the 4000 m altitude in the Cordillera Blanca in Peru. The only exception is the Cham Para region. It has an area of 3400 km ². The national park is located at 6768 m the highest mountain in Peru and fourth highest mountain in South America, which bears the name of Nevado Huascaran.

Flora and Fauna

One of the rarest plants on earth grows here. The Puya raimondii from the family of bromeliads, is up to 10 meters high and can reach an age of 100 years. Notable animal species found in the National Park, are the spectacled bear and the Andean condor. The National Park and its mountain range attracts many climbers from all over the world and the destination of many high expeditions, whose starting point is usually the city of Huaraz.

The establishment of the national park is to conserve flora, fauna, the beautiful scenery and scientific research. By controlling the access and the payment of an entrance fee of increasing annual stream of climbers to be regulated in order to prevent damage to the sensitive nature.

History

Already in the 1960s called the Peruvian mountaineer César Morales Arnao the area to protect the snowy mountain peaks in the Cordillera Blanca and to preserve the original landscape. But the area was declared according to the Legislative Decree N ° 0622-75 -AG to the national park until 1 July 1975. UNESCO declared 1985 the National Park World Heritage Site.
