Hubert Coppenrath

Hubert Coppenrath (born 18 October 1930 in Papeete, Tahiti, French Polynesia) is Emeritus Archbishop of Papeete, French Polynesia.

Family

Hubert Coppenrath's ancestors came from the native to Munster family of Coppenrath Verlag. His grandfather Caspar Coppenrath (* 1849 in Münster, † 1906 ibid. during a trip home ) had settled as a merchant in Tahiti, where he was married to Englishwoman Esther Bambridge. This couple had twelve children, who left a widespread offspring in Tahiti. His father was Clement Coppenrath (1888 - 1957) and was married to Martha Servant. Hubert Coppenrath is the younger brother of his immediate predecessor Archbishop Michel - Gaspard Coppenrath. His older brother Gerald Coppenrath (1922-2008) was from 1958 to 1962 French senator for Tahiti.

Life

Hubert Coppenrath attended the seminary of Saint- Sulpice in French Issy -les -Moulineaux and studied theology at the Institut Catholique de Paris. He was ordained a priest on 27 June 1957 and was Tahiti 1959-1967 vicar at the Cathedral of Papeete and priests in Arue. From 1961 to 1971 he was head of Catholic education on Thaiti and from 1967 to 1997 pastor of the Cathedral of Papeete. In addition, he took over from 1977 to 1997 head of the deacon training and from 1989 to 1997 Member of the Curé of the îles de l' Est. He was appointed Vicar General in 1993.

On November 21, 1997, Hubert Coppenrath of Pope John Paul II, the reigning Archbishop of Papeete, his own brother Michel Coppenrath, provided as Koadjutorerzbischof to the side. He received his episcopal consecration on 21 February 1998 his brother, whom he succeeded after his age-related resignation on 4 June 1999 as Archbishop of Papeete. On 31 March 2011, Pope Benedict XVI. the Hubert Coppenrath put forward reasons of age resignation from the office of the Archbishop of Papeete.

Coppenrath is a member of the Conférence des évêques de France ( CEF), the French Episcopal Conference.
