Hubert Robert

Hubert Robert ( May 22nd 1733 in Paris, † April 15, 1808 ) was a French painter.

Life

Hubert Robert 1745-1751 studied with the Jesuits at the Collège de Navarre. Michel -Ange Slodtz taught him perspective and drawing, whereupon Robert decided to turn to painting. In 1754 he went with Étienne- François de Choiseul, who was French ambassador there, to Rome. This compound was prepared by Robert's father, Nicolas Robert, initiated that, in the service of the Marquis of Stainville, François Joseph de Choiseul, which helped his son's career. In Rome Hubert Robert spent a total of eleven years. He met there many artists, including Giovanni Paolo Pannini and Giovanni Battista Piranesi, who had a great influence on him.

During the Great Terror of the French Revolution Robert was first held in October 1793 in the prisons Sainte- Pélagie and Saint- Lazare caught and released after the fall of Robespierre. Robert was a Jacobin and member of the National Convention. Along with Johann Heinrich Riesener he was member of a commission that created the expertise of the confiscated furniture of the nobility for revolutionary auctions.

The design of the sarcophagus for Jean -Jacques Rousseau in the park of Ermenonville comes from Hubert Robert, executed by the sculptor Jacques- Philippe Le Sueur.
