Life

Hubertus Ernst was ordained a priest on June 7, 1941, of the diocese of Breda. He was appointed the ninth Bishop of Breda on 3 November 1967. His predecessor Gerardus Henricus De Vet was previously suddenly no 50 years old, died. The Archbishop of Utrecht Cardinal Bernard January Alfrink dedicated it on 17 December of the same year the bishop. Co-consecrators were Antoon Martien Jansen, Bishop of Rotterdam, Pieter Antoon Nierman, Bishop of Groningen, The Petrus Joannes Antonius Moors, Bishop of Roermond and John Bluyssen, Bishop of 's-Hertogenbosch. His heraldic motto is: heri et hodie Christ - that is, "Christ yesterday and today".

On 6 May 1992, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation age-related. Only thirty months later he consecrated his successor Martinus Muskens the ninth Bishop of Breda.

Ernst was known as a progressive but cautious man. Even after his retirement, he was much in demand as a speaker, especially on ethical issues. The bishop was eighteen years as chairman of the Catholic peace movement Pax Christi in the Netherlands, where, for example, he defended the nuclear pacifism.
